path variables ${paths} : how to { get; set; }

Hi everyone i'm new in the forum.

I'm using SD to study with a Troelsen book and i'm having troubles understanding how things are done and where they are.
as an example: i installed VS2010 (under vista), so i have every SDK tool i need, but SD keeps telling me that it can't find sn.exe or any other tool... It's my understanding that it's all a matter of paths, but there's no xml file or reg-entry that allows me to see and modify these paths (and it's actually very frustrating). so i'm asking you:

 is there a way to at least get these paths, but preferibly  set them the way i like, so that SD won't have any excuse at all to tell me that nothing is in place?

( if still unclear, i'm talking about ${ItemPath, ItemDir, TargetPath, TargetDir, SdkToolPath, ... } variables. )

thank you in advance for every answer. any text file, any web-page with pre-defined values, is well accepted!
